CLASS XII :Detection of presence of Carbohydrates, Proteins and Fats in Given Food Stuffs

Test for Carbohydrates:

Molisch’s test – Food sample + Molisch’s reagent + Conc. H2SO4→ Purple or violet ring confirms the presence of carbohydrate.

Benedict’s test – Food Sample + Benedict’s reagent+ Heat → Orangish /Red precipitate confirms the presence of carbohydrates as a reducing sugar .

Tollen’s test – Food sample + Tollen’s reagent + Heat in water bath → Silver mirror confirms the presence of carbohydrates(Reducing sugar).

Fehling’s test – Food sample + Fehling’s reagent (A+B) + Heat in water bath → Red precipitate confirms the presence of carbohydrates( Reducing sugar)

Iodine test – Food Sample+ Iodine solution → Blue black colour solution confirms the presence of starch.

Test for Proteins:

Biuret test – Food Sample + copper sulfate(aq) + NaOH → Violet /Blue ppt confirms the presence of Proteins

Xanthoproteic test – Food sample + Conc. Nitric acid + Heat → Yellow ppt confirms the presence of proteins.
