1973 Fiat 130

I never had the issues others had with Fiats. My first Fiat was just the engine, it was wrapped around a Formula Jr. Stangelini. What glorious noises came out of the 1100 cc engine. Went like stink too. One summer I bought a customers 1960 Fiat 1100 sedan, a car that moved half of the 3rd world and all of Russia. A quick list of my Fiats; 128 sedan, Ritmo/Strada bought new, 124 coupe and convertible, 850 Coupe and spyder, a 131 sedan and coupe. All of them had medium to short stays with us except the 131 Coupe and the Ritmo/Strada that we kept for many years.

I would have been a buyer for the 130 as I loved the 131, We used the 131, more of a sports sedan, as a second family car the Ritmo/Strada was our first choice for the room and the big hatchback.

The bigger size of the 130 and the 3.2 liter Ferrari V6 would have been a great alternative to the 3 and series BMW's we later got into. Like I said in the Video, Fiat missed opportunities.

The Fiat reliability question was one that the manufacturer could have corrected very easily, and eventually they did. There are two areas of problems, the electrics and the fluid seals. The Fiat in the Video if you notice in the engine compartment, has a spare coil. This was a typical emergency fix as the electronic control unit failed on a regular basis. The work about was to have a standard coil ready to plug in in case of failure. The other was oil leaks. Fiat was a pioneer in many areas one of them was the early adoption of no gasket seals. Unfortunately the chemistry was not yet up to speed and the designers were still thinking of gaskets. I think today it is possible to keep these cars from leaking.
