Heaven On Their Minds Bass Cover

And all the good you've done will soon get swept away
You've begun to matter more than the things you say...

“Heaven On Their Minds” from the 1970 rock opera, “Jesus Christ Superstar” featuring the incredible Alan Spenner on bass and the equally impressive, Murray Head on vocals. Of course, the music was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber and the lyrics written by Tim Rice.

This album had a profound influence on me when I was young. I wore out a few copies of both this album along with the “Tommy” movie soundtrack. I think it might have been the storylines that initially held my interest, but both records were also incredibly bass-heavy and my ear seemed to be very drawn to them, as if I gravitated towards the bass before I really even knew what it was. Of course, a short while later, Gene Simmons came along and pushed me over the edge.

I’m a bit out of my comfort zone on this one as Mr. Spenner, in my opinion, was more of an improvisational player (more along the lines of John Paul Jones) than the type of players that I normally gravitate to. One of the challenging aspects of covering a song like this is that he very rarely plays the same thing twice, but I still tried my best to capture all the subtle variations.

I’m playing the Wal MK2 bass. Alan Spenner was known to play a Wal a bit later in his career.
