Only #sandeeppatil, sparkled with 65 in 78 balls, with 9 fours, before being hit on the head by a #lenpascoe bouncer. Australia made 406 with captain #gregchappell hitting 204, and #dougwalters 67. Kapil Dev and #karsanghavri took 5 wickets each. The batting collapsed again, and India made 201. Lilee had 3 wickets, and Jim Higgs 4. Viswanath was bowled by Hogg for 26 in the first innings and was stumped off Higgs for 24 in the second.

Under pressure, Gavaskar made runs for the first time, making 70 and a fine 165-run opening partnership with Chauhan, who followed up his 97 at Adelaide, with 85. From 243 for 2, India slumped to 324 with Vengsarkar(41), Patil(36), and Viswanath (30), the only contributors. Lilee had 4 wickets in the innings and eight in the match.
