H5N1 Bird Flu Alert in Karnataka | 40 Peacocks Die, Containment Zone Declared

Around 40 peacocks have died after testing positive for the H5N1 avian influenza virus in Tumkur district of Karnataka, triggering concern among wildlife and health authorities.

According to officials, the deaths were reported among wild birds, following which samples were sent for laboratory testing. The results have now confirmed the presence of the H5N1 virus.

Deputy Commissioner Subha Kalyan said authorities have declared a 10-kilometre radius around the epicentre as a containment zone. Rapid response teams have been deployed to carry out continuous surveillance to prevent further spread.

Officials have also identified 31 poultry shops and 10 farms in the affected region, with additional samples being collected for testing and monitoring.

The district administration has urged residents not to panic, while advising precautionary measures such as consuming only properly cooked meat.

According to the World Health Organization, H5N1 primarily affects birds but can infect humans in rare cases and may cause severe illness.
