Kate and Andy founded Kate Spade New York in January 1993. Spade was initially undecided on the brand's name, because she and Andy had not yet married, and "Kate Brosnahan" seemed a cumbersome name for a fashion label. She considered a number of names, but agreed when Andy suggested "Kate Spade", as she would take the name Spade after their marriage.

Spade made six prototypes with Scotch Tape and paper, and found a manufacturer in East New York willing to work with a startup to produce the bags. To finance the company, Andy, who had worked as a copywriter, withdrew his 401(k) pension plan and sometimes paid employees with personal checks. The couple spent their shipping season living at friends' apartments since their own was filled with boxed handbags.

After an early show at the Javits Center at which the department-store chain Barneys ordered a few bags, Spade decided to put the bag's labels on the outside, a change that took her all night to alter but established the brand
Since its inception in 1993, Kate Spade New York has maintained its reputation as one of the world’s most iconic fashion brands.

Best known and beloved for chic handbags, the label was founded by designer Kate Spade’s desire to create minimal and practical bags and purses for the modern woman.

You can’t get authentic Kate Spade from a purse party, a flea market, or in shopping districts such as Chinatown or Santee Alley. Nor can the bags be found at mall kiosks or auction sites sorry.

Kate Spade retailers are found in every state and every continent, but those are mainly department stores, luxury boutiques and Kate Spade stores. If you didn’t find your prospective purchase at one of these retailers, it’s safe to say it’s a fake.

The Label
On a real Kate Spade bag, a label with a country of origin will be sewn into the bag’s interior. There will also be a label sewn onto the front of the bag. On bags made since the year 2000, the label will say “Kate Spade New York” — unless it’s part of a special collection. In that case, it will say something like “Decade” or “Maira Kalman” below the name. If one of these labels is missing, it’s definitely a fraud.

Kate Spade purses are frequently replicated and sold at lower price points than authentic bags. Kate Spade knock-offs vary in quality. Some fakes are easy to spot, while others are difficult to discern from the real thing. Here's how to spot a fake Kate Spade purse.

Look for fabric tags sewn or glued on leather purses. Kate Spade always embosses her name on leather rather than using the fabric tag she uses on microfiber, cotton or other fabric bags.

Pay attention to the shape and size of the letters on the label. Go to the Kate Spade website to view authentic labels and compare the font on the suspected fake (see Resources below). If the letters vary in any way, this purse is not authentic as Kate Spade only uses one style of lettering.

Be suspicious of color block purses, bags with two small front pockets and backpacks. While Kate Spade did design bags like these, they were all produced over a decade ago and are hard to find. Most often, bags with these attributes are fakes.

Look out for large metal feet on the bottom of Kate Spade purses. Big, pointy metal studs or ones wider than the size of a dime are signs that you're not looking at a real Kate Spade purse.
