Reactor 4 sealed under the New Safe Confinement arch, the largest movable structure ever built. Pripyat, the Soviet city built in 1970 to house 50,000 plant workers and their families, abandoned in 36 hours and never reoccupied. The amusement park that was due to open four days after the disaster, with the Ferris wheel that never carried a single passenger and still stands rusting today. Classrooms with textbooks and gas masks on the desks. Apartment blocks with curtains still hanging in the windows, plants growing through floorboards, trees pushing up through concrete. The Duga radar, the massive Soviet over-the-horizon system known as the "Russian Woodpecker," hidden in the forest. Checkpoint Dityatki at the edge of the 30km Zone. And the silence. That's the part nobody prepares you for. A city built for 50,000 people with nothing but wind and birds.

Chernobyl isn't a tourist attraction. It's a warning. And it's unlike anywhere else on earth.
