Tony Gatlif is a director, screenwriter, actor, musician and producer.
Born 1948 in Algeria to a Berberian father and a Gypsy mother. Was introduced to the world of cinema in elementary school by a teacher who was screening movies in the neighborhood, and was charmed by it forever.
At 12 years old, he refused alone to France where he lived on the streets, sneaking into the movie theatre and working a shoe shiner, sailor and eventually studying acting.
Started theatre acting in the beginning of the 70s. In 1975, directs his first film and in 1983 gets recognition for his fourth film, "Les Princes". Since then, he created lot of cinematic masterpieces dedicated mostly to the story of the Gypsy people.
Music and dance have a critical role in the films of Tony Gatlif, sometimes even a leading role ("Latcho Drom", '93).
"Music is the only memory of the Gypsy nation", says Gatlif.

Gatlif's music is multi-faceted from Gypsy songs to techno, Flamenco and North African trance.
Among his films: Les Princes ('83), Latcho Drom ('93), Mondo ('95), Gajo Dilo ('97), Vengo (2000), Swing (2002), Exiles (2004), Transylvania (2006) and more.
