Reset Telegram Password - How to Recover Forgotten Telegram Password?

If you've forgotten your Telegram password, specifically the password used for two-step verification, there is a recovery process in place but only if you had set a recovery email when you first enabled the extra security feature. Telegram’s two-step verification is an optional layer of protection that requires a password in addition to the SMS code sent to your phone number during login. This helps prevent unauthorized access even if someone has access to your SIM card or phone.

To begin the recovery process, open the Telegram app and enter your phone number. After receiving the SMS verification code and entering it, Telegram will ask for your two-step verification password. If you do not remember this password, look for and tap the option labeled Forgot password. Telegram will then send a recovery code to the email address that was linked to your account during setup.

Open your email inbox and find the message from Telegram. Copy the recovery code included in that email, return to the app, and paste it into the verification field. After entering the correct recovery code, you will be prompted to create a new two-step verification password. This will successfully replace the forgotten password and restore access to your account.

If you did not add a recovery email when enabling two-step verification, unfortunately, there is no way to reset the password. Telegram does not offer alternative recovery methods in such cases. The only available option is to wait until the session expires and allow the account to be deleted due to inactivity. Once that happens, you can create a new Telegram account using the same phone number, but all previous messages, groups, and contacts will be permanently lost.

To prevent this issue in the future, always link a recovery email when enabling two-step verification. You can find this option in the app by going to Settings, then Privacy and Security, and selecting Two-Step Verification.
