WiFi 6, the next generation of wireless technology, is just now arriving in phones, laptops, and network equipment.

So how is WiFi 6 better than its previous iterations…and what were the previous iterations?

We’ve actually been using one of the previous iterations of WiFi, which can trace its roots to 1997, but back in the day it wasn’t called WiFi 1, instead it was referred to as 802.11, a number code designated by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, or IEEE.

Ever since, 802.11 has experienced several updates and changes and with each one, a different letter was tacked onto the end (802.11 a, 802.11 b, 802.11 g, you get the point), however to make things a little simpler for consumers the latest standard of 802.11 will be referred to as WiFi 6 while all others will be retroactively renamed to follow suit, for example 802.11ac will be called WiFi 5.

Back to WiFi 6, though.

WiFi 6 is promising faster speeds, an advanced ability to deliver internet to multiple devices to ease congestion, and more.
