Rabbi Israel Meir Lau Meets Son of US Army Chaplain Who Liberated Buchenwald
When the gates of the Buchenwald concentration camp opened and American troops entered they were shocked to see a little boy among the inmates. 8-year-old Lulek grew up to become Rabbi Israel Meir Lau, Chief Rabbi of Israel and Chairman of the Yad Vashem Council. Among the liberating troops, was US Chaplain Rabbi Herschel Schacter who provided comfort to the survivors in the immediate aftermath of the Holocaust. An iconic photograph on display at Yad Vashem captures Rabbi Lau as a young boy and Rabbi Herschel Schacter leading services at Buchenwald in May 1945. 74 years after liberation, Rabbi Lau shared an emotional embrace with the son of the Chaplain, Rabbi Jacob J Schacter.
