IOP-Reporting From the Frontline with NBC's Richard Engel and The New Yorker's Jon Lee Anderson

When armed conflicts emerge across the globe, journalists often rush to the frontline to report the news. Painting vivid pictures of the complexities of war and providing invaluable insight and context, these journalists often find themselves reporting from locations that are volatile and often hostile. Why do journalists pursue these high-risk assignments? What stories can only be told from reporting in conflict zones? And, how has covering conflicts changed with the advent of social media?

Join the IOP as NBC News Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel and The New Yorker’s Jon Lee Anderson discuss the nature and challenges of conflict reporting.

Engel, a veteran war correspondent, gained notoriety for his extensive coverage of the Iraq War, the Arab Spring, and the Syrian Civil War, with his “War Zone Diary” winning the Medill Medal for Courage in Journalism. Anderson, a biographer and investigative journalist, has reported from war zones across the Middle East and is well known for his profiles of political leaders. Josh Meyer, an award-winning national security journalist and lecturer at the Medill School of Journalism, will moderate.
