Virginity is a big deal in India. Despite so much exposure to social media and openness to talk about topics relating to sexual issues, a lot of Indians want to marry only virgins.
Pandering to conservative India's continuing preference for virgins, a lot of Indian girls are going under the knife for hymen reconstruction surgeries (called hymenoplasty)
There are even pills and artificial hymen being sold online that "help" women appear to be virgins again.
