Russia: Nuclear subs surface from under Arctic ice in Umka-2021 expedition

Three Russian nuclear submarines surfaced from under Arctic ice simultaneously for the first time in the history of Russia as a part of the Umka-21 Arctic expedition, as Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov reported on Friday.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defence, the three nuclear submarines surfaced from under the ice at a distance of up to 300 metres from each other.

According to Yevmenov, Umka-2021, is underway since March 20 in the Franz Josef Land archipelago region, Alexandra Land and adjacent waters with the participation of the Russian Geographical Society.

Umka-21 Arctic expedition exercises took place in harsh climatic conditions and strong winds.
