Your ACL - Anterior Cruciate Ligament In The Knee

This video is about knee problems, specifically problems related to the ACL or anterior cruciate ligament of your knee. I've decided to produce this video because I recently started feeling some pain in my right knee, and I thought it might be an ACL problem. So I did a deep dive into some research on the subject, using only credible, reliable websites like those on the screen, and I'm going to summarize what I learned in the next minute or so.

Ligaments are bands of tissue that connect bones to other bones. In your knee, ligaments cross each other to form sort of an "X." The anterior cruciate ligament in front and the posterior cruciate ligament in back. These control the back and forth motion of your knee.

The anterior cruciate ligament prevents the tibia from sliding out in front of the femur, and it also provides rotational stability to the knee.

According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, ACL sprains or tears are among the most common knee injuries. There are around 200-thousand acl injuries each year in the US alone, and about half of those result in reconstructive surgery.

Athletes who who play soccer, football, and basketball are most at risk, and I was surprised to learn that female athletes are more likely to suffer ACL injuries than males.

I was also a bit surprised to learn that the typical ACL injury occurs without outside contact or blunt force being applied to it. More often you get it from decelerating or stopping quickly, twisting, cutting, or jumping.

Someone who injures their acl often hears or feels a "popping" sensation. Depending on the severity, you might be able to continuing doing what you were doing. But chances are, you'll have to stop because of pain, and a few hours later, there's likely to be a lot of swelling.

I have several other videos on YouTube that goes into more depth on knee injuries. You can find links to those videos below.
