LGBTQ gun group membership rises after White House trans statement | FOX 10 Phoenix
The Tucson Pink Pistols, an LGBTQ+ organization that teaches its members how to protect themselves and use firearms, is reporting a rise in membership following a recent announcement from the Trump administration. The administration stated that it will prioritize the rapid identification and neutralization of violent political groups whose ideology is anti-American, radically pro-transgender, and anarchist. Members practice shooting firearms at the Zona Tactical Gun Range to gain peace of mind and learn situational awareness.
April Gendill, the president of the Tucson Pink Pistols, transitioned in the early 90s and notes that her experience as a trans woman has gotten scarier over time in Tucson, having been harassed in parking lots twice. She started the nonprofit organization about a year ago to provide a way for community members to defend themselves if things went the absolute worst they could go. Gendill stated, "Everytime an irresponsible statement is said by the White House, we have a boost in membership."
Cayce Kenney, the director of community administration for the group, is one of 700 members and believes the White House announcement is just a way to further other them as a community. Pima County Republican Party Chairman Kathleen Winn defended the government policy, stating that the monitoring creates safety for everyone and is not focused on all transgender individuals, but rather specific concerns related to national security. In response, Gendill emphasized that being transgender is not a political statement or anti-American, concluding, "It's just who we are!"
