The IRS is Opening 125,000 New Non-Filer Cases
The IRS announced that it is going after thousands of individual taxpayers who have failed to file tax returns since 2017. To notify these taxpayers that a non-filer case has been opened against them, the IRS is sending out Notice CP59. If non-filers do not comply with the IRS’s demands for them to file their required tax returns, the IRS may prepare a return for them. These IRS-prepared returns are called substitutes for return and are generally not taxpayer-friendly at all.
