Japan's brutal whaling practices exposed | 60 Minutes Australia
In 2001, the fight to save the world's whales from extinction was at a critical juncture. While commercial whaling was officially banned in 1986 , a controversial loophole allowed Japan to continue hunting hundreds of minke whales each year in the Southern Ocean under the guise of "scientific research".
In this 2001 report, legendary 60 Minutes correspondent Richard Carleton travels to the International Whaling Commission (IWC) in London to expose the intense political battle over the future of these magnificent creatures. Carleton confronts Japanese officials about their whaling practices and investigates explosive allegations that Japan used foreign aid and "dirty politics" to buy the votes of small Caribbean and Pacific nations in order to block the creation of a South Pacific Whale Sanctuary.
