How To Find A Sewer Smell (using tricks the pros use)

This was a really cool video shoot. We were actually able to identify the likely SOURCE of the sewer leak by smell and this was after other contractors had come to the home. We then used a camera system but bombed out on identifying the source. We then used SMOKE to confirm a possible source of the odor might be coming from and THEN we identified a broken sewer line.

Once you watch this video you should earn the following.

** Why it can be hard to detect the actual source of sewer odor.
** Why some contractors are not able to find the source even after you pay them
** Some cool tricks and tools ANYONE can use to help identity leaks

Sewer smell has to be one of the most annoying and downright awful feeling to have in your home. It's a constant hassle and could potentially lead to various potential health hazards. The problem with confirming the sources of sewer smell is that it's difficult to do especially if you lack the proper equipment. In this video, our client has already called in several plumbers, handymen, and other experts to fix her problem but no one has actually solved it. Someone even suggested that they fix her entire plumbing system to get the job done which is just insane. That could have been thousands of dollars that the customer would have to pay for a single broken pipe. Instead of fixing everything, using our detection equipment we identify the actual source of the odor and find the actual issue which was a broken sewer pipe.

The pipe is an old galvanized steel pipe which does break down after about ten years. It happens quite often especially in older homes that use this type of plumbing. If you're looking to hire a plumber in the future to get this fixed make sure they use the right equipment to identify the problem and fix it the right way. We use two detection tools in this case, a standard sewer camera and a smoke machine. The camera is useful at identifying obvious large breaches that can be easily found while the smoke machine is used for cases where the breach is not obvious.

Using the smoke machine we were able to verify the breach in the client's laundry room which we initially thought was a break in the wall. We applied a seal on it and redid the smoke test but found that smoke was still leaking on the walls. We then proceeded with tearing up a section of the wall to look at the pipe system inside. Upon opening, we see a huge pipe break and do the necessary replacement and repair. After the repair, we do the smoke test again and see that we're all clear. We reseal the wall and call the client to see the finished work. The client couldn't be more grateful for having the odor removed from her laundry room and saving her the cost of replacing her entire pipe system.

If you want to know what type of equipment and their cost we used for this fix here they are: we used a Sewer Smoke Blower (Est $400-$1000) Drywall Cutter ($70-$300) and a Sewer Scope ($300-$3000).

If you've already had someone out and they CANNOT identify the source of smell it's likely you'll need to call an experienced professional out. You could try the Twins Team.
