Why Do Blood Clots Form? DVT & PE Risk Explained #bloodclot #dvt #pulmonaryembolism

Day 2 of 31 - Why do blood clots form?

Blood clots are the body’s natural response to stop bleeding after injury. However, when a clot forms inside a vein or artery without an obvious wound, it can block blood flow and become dangerous.

Common risk factors for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) include prolonged immobility (long flights or bed rest), recent surgery, cancer, pregnancy, hormonal therapy, obesity and inherited clotting disorders.

A clot in the leg can cause DVT. If part of it travels to the lungs, it can cause a pulmonary embolism. Blood clots may also increase the risk of stroke or heart attack.

Warning symptoms include:
• Sudden one-sided leg swelling
• Calf pain or tenderness
• Chest pain
• Shortness of breath

If you are in Singapore and concerned about DVT, PE, varicose veins, peripheral arterial disease (PAD) or other vascular conditions, early assessment is important.
