How to Create Paint Crackle Effects - Part 3 - Sodium Silicate - Scenic Art

One classic way to do a crackle effect is mixing sodium silicate into your paint. This method is definitely more "scientific" because it greatly relies on your own "chemical experiment" to work.

To use sodium silicate for crackle, you need to have shellac as your base. Many people say you should apply your sodium silicate mixture within 10 or 30 minutes, while the shellac is still tacky, but I've found that it works more or less the same when the shellac is completely dry.

When mixing the shellac into your paint, it should be about a 95% paint to 5% sodium silicate ratio. It doesn't take much to create a great effect. However, once the paint is mixed with the sodium silicate, it will only last about 20 minutes, so only mix the amount you need.

The sodium silicate I used in this video was bought from Blick Art Supplies, but there are many other places, especially ceramic supplies sellers, that have it.
