What is it about water and freedom? #musicrelease #Analysis

Happy Black History Month Americans! Happy Valentines? I suppose! This video is for you!

Based on the second verse of Weights, I look into the ways we use water to describe what freedom looks like

ID: Anusha, a dark skinned woman with short twists holding a rode mic and a white dressing gown with polka dots.
Transcript: Alright, section two, the verse. I want to be caressed by the water my toes deep in the sand I know the sea will treat me so delicately, even if for a moment. My mum always said that it's something to do with slavery because she always relays a story to me about slaves jumping in the water, to escape and be free, even if they knew they were going to die.
I'm not gonna try and act like I thought of that when I was writing this, but I wrote it and then the thought came after of like, "wow, we really do talk about water a lot" Water is our freedom, you know, during the slave trade there is the song; "Wade in the Water".

This is from the American songwriter the Craft of Music, today this song is associated with tunes from the Underground Railroad, a network that helped free slaves during the time of slavery. Famous abolitionist W.B. du Bois called the genre of song from which Wade in the Water comes from sorrow song.

He added that they were African Americans greatest gift and a single- a singular spiritual heritage of a nation. Right. Well, isn't that interesting? We both learned something today. But I do love the idea of water.
I think whenever we as black people want to talk, about freedom and we also talk about life after death, we tend to relate to water. And I think we all have that connection in some way. And I do find it quite sad, but also quite beautiful.
I wanted to honour this in my own way in this section. For me, honestly, I do, I hate swimming, but I do love water and I always feel like I can just be myself when it comes to being in water. So that's where the inspiration came from, really.

Nothing more to it.
