Thursday Morning Forecast for Baton Rouge 6-20-24

Meteorologist Ashley Renee has your 8:15 am forecast. Good morning and happy Thursday. Today is the first day of Summer. Happy Summer! There’s a 30% chance of showers and t-storms for this afternoon. Rain should clear out this evening or before the afternoon is over. Some drier air is also filtering into our area which will also contribute to lower rain chances. Skies will be mostly sunny to partly cloudy and highs will be in the low and mid 90s. Winds will still be a little breezy. Easterly winds will be around 10-15 mph, but wind gusts could reach 20 mph. The pressure gradient between the ridge of high pressure over the east coast and the low pressure system in the Gulf is still tight enough so that will contribute to continued breezy winds for today. Coastal flood warnings and advisories are still in effect for the Louisiana coast as breezy easterly winds will continue to cause flooding concerns...especially during the high tide cycles. The ridge of high pressure that was over our area near the end of last week moved east and has been over the east coast for a few days. This is expected to shift westward and move over our region. With this occurring, temperatures will rise and we'll have drier weather. Highs will be in the mid and upper 90s for Friday and this weekend. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected for Friday and into early next week. This will be the usual summertime pattern of afternoon pop-up showers and thunderstorms. Now to talk about the tropics. Potential Tropical Cyclone One became Tropical Storm Alberto just before 10 AM CST Wednesday morning. Its current wind speeds are at 50 mph. Alberto made landfall near Tampico, Mexico just before 7 am CST this morning. Its wind speeds were at 50 mph, but they have weakened to 45 mph. This system will continue to weaken as it moves farther inland. There are two other disturbances to talk about still. The first disturbance is in the southwestern Atlantic. It has a 40% chance of development within the next two days and also seven days. Right now, it’s disorganized showers and thunderstorms. If it does become more organized and continues developing, it’ll continue on a W/NW track to the southeast US Coast. The second disturbance is in the Gulf. It has low chances of development over the next two days and medium chances over the next seven days. If it continues developing, it looks like it’ll also take the same track or a similar track as TS Alberto. Stay tuned for updates on the tropics. Just to recap, it will be HOT this weekend. Drink plenty of water and stay cool in the shade or AC...especially if you’ll be outside at events. Don’t forget to check on your pets and the elderly to make sure they have enough water and are staying cool. Thanks for watching. Have a triumphant Thursday!
