VMware to Azure Migration: Azure Migrate Appliance Setup & VM Discovery | Tutorial Part 1

💡 Part 1 of the Azure Migrate VMware Series
In this video, we’ll walk through the deployment and configuration of the Azure Migrate appliance for VMware — and perform vCenter discovery to list all on-premises VMs and software inventory.
This session focuses on setting up the appliance, connecting to Azure, configuring credentials, and validating discovery — it does not include migration (covered in the next video).

✅ Create an Azure Migrate project and resource group
✅ Generate project key and download OVA appliance
✅ Deploy the appliance in vCenter
✅ Configure network, DNS, and Azure connectivity
✅ Install and configure VMware Virtual Disk Development Kit (VDDK)
✅ Register appliance with Azure portal
✅ Add vCenter credentials and discovery settings
✅ Perform agentless discovery of VMs
✅ View inventory and software details in Azure Migrate

🔐 Accounts and Permissions
Azure Account Roles:
Contributor (Subscription + Resource Group)
User Access Administrator

vCenter Service Account Role: Custom with privileges for:
Datastore (browse, allocate space, file operations)
Virtual Machine configuration
Guest operations
Snapshot management
Network assignment
Required Ports:
443 (vCenter API)
902 (ESXi host communication)
5985/5986 (WinRM for guest discovery)
