Liked or effective - do we have to choose?

Do we have to choose between being liked or effective at work? Clément Toulemonde, Interactifs International Development Director & Interactifs Discipline© trainer, answers:

Thank God no... Otherwise I'd probably be doing something else with my life ;) And I think it's because we feel we have to choose, that we end up suffering too much in the conversations we have and making other people suffer too much in the conversations we have with them. Here is the challenge: ask the people you know (or even the people you don't know that you have to talk to) that question: « How do you want to be spoken to? ». I guarantee you that, regardless of age, race, gender, culture, personality, type, or mood of the day, that the person you asked will say: « I want to be spoken to in a way that is clear, simple, straight to the point, precise, concise and at the same time polite, warm, courteous and respectful, regardless of culture ». We have asked that question to more than a hundred thousand people across the world.
And when we are obsessed with the result, the effectiveness, we tend to go to the very direct straight-to-the-point approach. And often relationships suffer as a result. When we are obsessed with the relationship, we become very warm very polite, but we tend to give up on what it is we wanted in the first place.
And that is something that is not a fatality. It's not something that we need to be a prisoner of, it all depends on how clear we are with ourselves, as to what we really want to say and on how well we end up saying it.
