The Best of Athens (4K) - Acropolis, Parthenon, Erechtheum, Odeon of Herodes Atticus

This is the Acropolis of Athens segment of DIY Layover - Athens (ATH) and the host Charles Huang will visit this UNESCO World Heritage Site and ancient citadel located on a rocky outcrop above the city of Athens. Pericles, a prominent and influential Greek statesman, orator and general of Athens during its golden age in the fifth century BC who coordinated the construction of the site's most important present remains including the Parthenon, the Propylaea, the Erechtheion and the Temple of Athena Nike. The visit starts with a visit to the Theatre of Dionysus on the south slope of the Akropolis hill, first orchestra terrace was constructed on the site around the mid- to late-sixth century BC, where it hosted the City Dionysia. Follow by the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, built in 161 AD by the Greek Herodes Atticus in memory of his Roman wife, Aspasia Annia Regilla. It was originally a steep-sloped theater with a three-story stone front wall and a wooden roof made of expensive cedar of Lebanon timber. The Parthenon is the most famous and iconic temple on the hill and dedicated to the goddess Athena, whom the people of Athens considered their patron. Construction began in 447 BC when the Athenian Empire was at the peak of its power. It was completed in 438 BC, although decoration of the building continued until 432 BC. It is the most important surviving building of Classical Greece, generally considered the zenith of the Doric order. Second most visible structure is the Erechtheion on the north side of the Acropolis, built between 421 and 406 BC. Its architect may have been Mnesicles, and it derived its name from a shrine dedicated to the legendary Greek hero Erichthonius. The sculptor and mason of the structure was Phidias, who was employed by Pericles to build both the Erechtheum and the Parthenon. Some have suggested that it may have been built in honour of the legendary king Erechtheus, who is said to have been buried nearby. On the way down, you can also visit the Philopappos Monument on Mouseion Hill, southwest of the Acropolis. This is an ancient Greek mausoleum and monument dedicated to Gaius Julius Antiochus Epiphanes Philopappos, a prince from the Kingdom of Commagene 65–116 AD.
