Australian coal is 'high quality, in demand' and people are desperate for it: Canavan

Nationals Senator Matt Canavan says he does not know how many times the left need to be proven wrong on the quality and demand for Australian coal amid news coal demand "has almost never been higher".

"The news broke this morning that demand for Australian coal has almost never been higher, people are desperate for it," he told Sky News host Alan Jones.

"They've been believing all these fairytales that somehow coal was dead, that the market for coal was on the decline and would never rise again.

"Once again, I mean I don't know how many times these guys have to be proven wrong but they will continue if they don't understand the detail and the facts to get it wrong.

"Because our coal is high quality, it's in demand and that's proven the price we've seen today."
