Now that's a stamp album!

Would the printer responsible for this 1892 stamp album recognise the computer generated loose- leaf flexible system albums of today? My guess is that he would marvel at the ease in which a country- dedicated album page could be created but he would still find the finished result a little bland.

The outer cover of this lovely old album produced by the Schwaneberger firm of Leipzig belies its contents. The black, red, blue & gold binder showing ships, trains & pyramids hints at a rather junior theme, but once opened that first impression is instantly dispelled as each album page is a work of true craftsmanship.

Every country, state or colony has a heading page with a map, the first stamp page is topped with an engraved portrait of the national leader plus a coat of arms, flag or other symbol, further down we see spaces for issued stamps often with helpful illustrations.

It's the end of the road for this grand old 19th Century album because are selling it off, country by country!
