Giant puppets march into the Theatre Of Youth 03-18-2015

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) - Artisans have been hard at work at the Theatre of Youth in Buffalo creating a land of giants.

There are ugly giants, sleeping giants, grumpy giants and BFG - that's the Big Friendly Giant and also the name of the show based on Roald Dahl's edgy but not too scary classic children's story. It's being brought to life by director Meg Quinn.

"I love the idea that it's about a child who does a courageous thing, who makes friends with an unknown being and the two of them solve a big problem and rescue the world. And children love that kind of story full of imagination and fantasy," she said.

The fantasy is aided by the use of giant masks and tiny puppets, all created by master puppet builder Adam Kreutinger.

He explained, "What's fun about this is the BFG is a regular-sized person. So we had to make some of the other giants larger. That's where these masks come in. And for the people he interacts with, we had to make scale versions of the actors."

BFG has a wildly colorful set design, a clever cast and a terrific story incorporating the huge puppets and masks. The show opens Friday at the Theatre Of Youth.
