Securing Your Home & Yard
Hi, this is Amber from Rover.com. We all know dogs can be escape artists and today I’m going to give you some quick dog-proofing tips to keep your home and yard safe, secure, and dog friendly.
First, to keep dogs from escaping from the house, place a second barrier around high traffic doorways to the outside. We recommend an an exercise pen around the inside of the front door, so your dog can’t rush out when you’re going in and out.
To be extra cautious, you can also use a baby gate to block off the room or hall that leads to the front door, giving you time to stop attempted break outs.
Even if your yard is fully fenced, all outdoor time should be supervised. Some dogs aren’t afraid to climb, jump, or dig to go out exploring. Be sure all gates are closed and latched, and walk your fence line to ensure that there aren’t any gaps or holes a dog could squeeze out of. We recommend testing your fences for loose slats—barriers that may seem secure could still be pushed open by a tenacious dog.
Another thing to remember is that dogs love to eat anything they shouldn’t. Keep your counters clear, keep all bags out of the reach of curious noses, and familiarize yourself with human food that may be harmful to dogs.
As gross as it is, the trash is always a tempting place for dogs. To keep them from snagging some unsightly snacks, tuck your trash can in a cabinet or buy one with a lid (some of them even have handy pet-proof locks).
Lastly, make sure all toxic cleaners and chemicals are securely stored in cabinets or areas where your dog isn’t allowed to go.
It all comes down to this: dogs are members of people’s families, so keeping them safe is the most important thing you can do as a sitter. Following these tips will put you on the right track to keeping your dogs happy, healthy, and with you.
