Battling The FEROCIOUS NAZI SS Through The Ruins Of Europe: One Man's Story | Remember WWII
PLEASE SUPPORT OUR MISSION TO HONOR OUR WWII VETERANS: https://www.gofundme.com/f/Rememberww2 Thank you 🙏
Vernon 'Vern' Schmidt's experiences fighting the Nazis in Europe are a unique and utterly compelling record of life in the midst of total war, colossal casualties, and genocide. He and his comrades attacked the infamous and heavily fortified Siegfried Line. They crossed the Rhine, and fought house-to-house with an SS executing a painful retreat through obliterated German towns.
Vern's account of the realities of World War II combat are a grim reminder of some of the most shameful episodes in human history, and it is essential that these stories are told. We must attempt to learn from this generation - those who were there.
Vern witnessed the deplorable state of recently-liberated salt mines, where the Nazi regime forced their fellow human beings to work backbreaking labor under enslaved conditions. Jews, political dissidents, Romani, and others deemed undesirable to the Nazis were worked to death in unimaginable conditions.
As defeat for the Nazis became a slow and grinding inevitability, Vern crossed the Rhine alongside his fellow soldiers, seeing firsthand the chaos left behind by the retreating Germans. Roads strewn with bodies, the horror of abandoned concentration camps, public executions and forced 'death marches' towards Germany are a terrifying reality of our history. Stories told by people like Vern Schmidt are an essential historical record of the most colossal conflict in human history.
