Normal... is a dryer setting | Debra Jenkins | TEDxHuntsville
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Sir Winston Churchill says that everyone will be "figuratively tapped on the shoulder and offered the chance to do a very special thing, unique to them and fitted to their talents." Debra's tap on the shoulder led her on an unconventional journey that includes people with special needs and her son's drug addiction, and gave her a new understanding of what it really means to be "normal."
Debra Jenkins created The Johnny Stallings Arts Program in 2008, at Merrimack Hall Performing Arts Center, a non-profit organization founded by Debra and her husband, Alan. Her program provides visual and performing arts activities to nearly 500 children and adults with special needs and has been recognized regionally and nationally for the unique nature of its elements. Debra works full-time as a volunteer at Merrimack Hall, guiding every aspect of its operation. She has received numerous local, regional and national awards for her volunteer efforts and is the author of www.dreamingwithyourfeet.com, a blog about the people with special needs who have touched her life. Her blog is published on The Huffington Post. Debra was selected for the Senior Leaders Program for Non-Profit Professionals at Columbia University in 2014.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
