United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres met Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in Tokyo on Monday during his four-day official visit to Japan.

The visit comes as Japan marks the 70th anniversary of joining the United Nations, with Tokyo saying the trip is expected to further strengthen cooperation between Japan and the UN.

According to Japan’s Foreign Ministry, Guterres is also scheduled to meet Emperor Naruhito and participate in the United Nations System Chief Executive Board for Coordination, which is being held in Asia for the first time.

Discussions between Prime Minister Takaichi and Guterres are expected to cover global security, international cooperation, humanitarian crises, climate issues and Japan’s role within the United Nations system.

Guterres’ Japan visit comes amid growing geopolitical tensions in Asia and ongoing international conflicts, placing renewed attention on multilateral diplomacy and the role of the UN in global stability.
