The cancel culture 'scourge' must be called out: Alan Jones

Sky News host Alan Jones says the “scourge” of cancel culture must be confronted but the nation’s political leaders have lost their voices in calling it out.

“I hate the expression,” Mr Jones said.

He said the phrase “cancel culture” in fact “implies a sense of endorsement ... something new on the scene that we just, no matter the damage (we) have to accommodate”.

Mr Jones said "denying history risks repeating it".

The phrase relates to removing support for public figures on the basis of their opinions or actions.

Mr Jones also discussed numerous issues with Broadcaster Michael McLaren who said the irony behind the movement is that "if it weren't for people like (Winston) Churchill, changes are ... you would have had capitulation in World War Two".

"And the freedoms, including the freedom to protest would have been taken away from these people".

Over the past weeks, widespread Black Lives Matter protests have been seen across Australia and the world, while statues of significant figures in history have been vandalised or destroyed due to their alleged links to racism.

In England, the monument dedicated to former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill was defaced during a recent Black Lives Matter protest in London, with the word ‘racist’ being written across the statue.

"Leaving Churchill aside, the thing has gone mad," Mr McLaren said.
