Morales: Jubilate Deo - Savall

Cristóbal de Morales: Jubilate Deo

This piece was written for the Truce of Nice of 1538, a truce between Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and Francis I, King of France, which put an end to a long war between them. This treaty was solicited by the Pope Paul III, so these 3 persons are the Carolus, Paulus and Franciscus mentioned in the text of this motet.

Jubilate Deo omnis terra,
cantate omnes, jubilate et psallite,
quoniam suadente Paulo,
Carolus et Franciscus,
principes terrae convenerunt in unum,
et pax de caelo descendit.
O felix aetas, o felix Paule,
o vos felices Principes,
qui christiano populo pacem tradidistis.
Vivat Paulus! Vival Carolus!
Vivat Franciscus!
Vivant, vivant simul
et pacem nobis donent in aeternum!
Cantus firmus: Gaudeamus!

=== ENGLISH ===

Rejoice in the Lord, all the earth,
sing, rejoice, recite psalms,
since persuaded by Paul,
Charles and Francis,
princes of this world have reached an accord
and peace has descended from Heaven.
Oh happy time, oh happy Paul,
oh you happy princes,
who have brought peace to the Christian people.
Long live Paul, long live Charles,
long live Francis!
Long may they live, long may they live together,
and give us everlasting peace!
Cantus firmus: Let us rejoice.
