The end of the Prague Spring 1968 (Documentary, 2008)
In the spring of 1968, a breath of freedom blew through the Czech Republic and raised hope throughout Europe.
With the so-called "Prague Spring", a "socialism with a human face" was born. An expression for the efforts of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia to impose a liberalization and democratization program.

The documentary reminds us of this tragedy in the heart of Europe.
Filmmaker Peter Heller places the events of the time, in front of the radio building on Wenceslas Square in Prague, at the centre of his reflections. Prague Radio played a central role, as it was here that resistance was articulated and organized by Jiri Dienstbier. Twenty years later, he became Václav Havel's foreign minister.
Film director Jirí Menzel, who received in 1967 the Oscar for the best foreign-language film for "Liebe nach Fahrplan", was censored and banned from working at the time.
Peter Heller's film is framed by a tragic love story. A West German student falls in love with a Ukrainian girl and comes to Prague on the day of the invasion - after all, the Prague Spring also offered opportunities for a love beyond borders - for a love between East and West. Politics and its leaders, such as Alexander Dubcek and his liberal ideas, are of little interest to the student. His sweetheart is waiting for him at Prague Central Station. On their way from there, they get into the tank barricades in front of the radio building. The 20-year-old art student is seriously injured - a shot penetrates his pelvis. He will remain disabled for life. 40 years later, Liuba and Hubert meet again...
