Coronavirus: Huge queues at rapid test sites around the island
Huge queues formed on Sunday at rapid testing sites in all areas.

Due to increased demand the ministry of health said all sites will remain open until 7.30pm on Sunday night.

Also, the units that are at certain schools around the island for students will be open to members of the pubic, and will also remain open until 7.30pm.

“There was not only every Tom, Dick and Harry but all their mates as well,” one disgruntled Nicosia resident said.

Another woman complained she had had to wait two hours in the sunshine while there was no social distancing being observed in the queues. “Those who need to be tested for work or studying purposes should be prioritised before those wishing to visit the mall/restaurants/bars,” she said.

As a result of the new measures a huge inconvenience was caused to thousands of people around the island, main opposition Akel said in a statement. “We call on the government to immediately make all the necessary arrangements to ensure that the same scenario is not repeated”.

A high number of rapid tests was also carried out on Saturday – 64,079.

The high number of people seeking a test is a result of schools reopening on Monday and all children of gymnasium and lyceum being required to undergo a test before they go back.

In addition the SafePass will come into force on Monday meaning those that have not been vaccinated or suffered from coronavirus in the last six months will need a rapid or PCR test not older than 72 hours to do most things, including getting on a bus, going to a café, bar or restaurant and going to some shops.

A SafePass will not be needed to go to the supermarket or other shops selling food and drink that remained open during the current lockdown.

The government has underlined that although the SafePass is needed to enter places, only police officers or other members of state services will be allowed to ask people to present it.
