The idea
Gandhi's vision was to create a "Shauchalaya Pradarshni" (toilet gallery) to show people how building toilets around the country was changing society, how to use excreta manure for biogas production, and to abolish untouchability.
The location
The gallery is located in the front yard of the Harijan Sewak Sangh in the Kingsway Camp area of north Delhi.
The execution
Sanitation activist Ishwarbhai Patel converted Gandhi's vision into a tangible form at the gallery.
Gandhi also believed that sanitation was more important than independence and that swachhta led to a healthy and prosperous life. The Indian government launched the Swachh Bharat Mission (Clean India Mission) on October 2, 2014, on the 145th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The mission's goal was to make India open defecation free by October 2, 2019, Mahatma Gandhi's 150 birth anniversary.
