▶️Video Description
Cross flow cooling towers are similar in many respects to counter flow cooling towers, but the big difference is that air flows perpendicularly across the fill and not at 180 degrees; this means the air passes at an angle of 90 degrees relative to the direction of the water flow. This crossing of flow paths is the reason these types of tower are known as ‘cross flow’ cooling towers.
Cross flow cooling towers are used as a heat sink (they reject waste heat). They rely upon the principle of evaporative cooling.
Operation
Water enters the top of the tower and is distributed through spray nozzles to the fill. The fill may be of the film fill design or splash bar design. The water drops down through the fill and into the lower reservoir.
As the water drips through the fill, some of it evaporates and this cools the remaining water that did not evaporate. The cooled water remains in the reservoir until it is pumped to the process.
Some of the evaporated water is reclaimed by a drift eliminator whilst some is discharged through the top of the tower. This type of tower is an induced draft tower because the air passes over the heat exchanger before passing over the cooling tower fan.
That is how a cross flow cooling tower works!
