Understanding the Psychology Behind Club Lines

Why do clubs intentionally keep people waiting in line, even when there’s ample space inside? What psychological tricks are at play that make us willing to pay exorbitant amounts for bottle service?

In this clip of EYL, host Rashad Bilal and guest Felecia Hatcher delve into the intriguing world of human nature and decision-making. Rashad kicks off the conversation by revealing a well-kept secret: many clubs create artificial scarcity by keeping lines outside, making the club seem more crowded and desirable than it actually is. This intentional strategy taps into our innate desire for social validation and anticipation of exclusivity.

Rashad explains, "That's why clubs intentionally have lines, right? You go in the club sometimes and it's empty, there's enough room to get people in. But it's like if nobody's waiting on line, it doesn't look like it's lit. If somebody's waiting on line now, you'll pay $3,000 for bottle service. Cause the anticipation on what's inside based off of people trying to get in that's not able to get in, makes it more appealing than if they just let everybody in."

Felecia adds to the discussion by examining how human nature often drives us to make decisions based on external validation rather than our own preferences. She states, "As human nature, we make decisions oftentimes not based off of ourselves, but the validation of someone else."
