Twenty years ago, Hurricane Katrina changed the course of our lives.

Twenty years ago, Hurricane Katrina changed the course of our lives. What many people didn’t see was how the stress, fear, and trauma stayed with some of us long after the floodwaters receded.

For me, my body kept score. The anxiety and trauma became so overwhelming that I experienced severe convulsions whenever I stood. Katrina wasn’t just a storm I survived—it was something my mind and body carried for years.

This weekend, something unexpected happened. Healing.

Being surrounded by my McMain Class of 2006 family, recreating the prom Katrina stole from us, sharing stories, laughter, tears, and seeing faces I hadn’t seen since before the storm reminded me that trauma may leave scars, but community helps us heal.

Twenty years later, we didn’t just celebrate a reunion. We reclaimed a piece of ourselves. We honored who we were, who we became, and the resilience that carried us through.

Katrina changed our lives, but it didn’t break our spirit. And this weekend reminded me that sometimes healing comes from returning to the people who remember your story before the storm.
