Fly Fishing Squirmy Wormy Worm - Pennine Trout Fishery UK

Great days fishing at Pennine Trout Fishery in Lancashire today, you just can’t beat this place, one of the best waters I have fished and why I visit the place so much.

Today was my first visit since the lock down had started and after wondering what flies to fish on this visit as normal it all went out of the window and on the day I went for the red squirmy wormy (red blood worm) and I was not disappointed it was the killer fly of the day.

I fished the worm on a 10ft 7wt rod, floating line and a long leader of 14ft down to a 6Ib tippet. Simple attics on the day of just letting the worm sink through the water until either the floating line moved, or once the worm was deep down retrieve it with a slow figure of 8.

In total I landed 10 rainbows with this fly from 3Ib - 6lb and lost a further 4 due to barbless hooks.
All the rainbow trout were hard fighting and put the 5Ib tippet to test. 6Ib was my best trout on the day, but John who was fishing across from me took my advice and switched to the squirmy wormy, within 30 minutes he hooked and landed a fantastic 14Ib rainbow.

Apart from the wormy fly I also fished a size 12 bloodworm buzzer under a bung for an hour, which gave a further 4 rainbows. The buzzer was no more than 12inch down and again resulted in hooking some good hard fighting rainbow trout.

Check out the Pennine Fishery Facebook page. They have a great fish catch gallery.
