Ancient History of England

Old Book "Origin of the Anglo Saxon Race" by Tomas Shor. The book was published in 1906.

Anglo-Saxon settlement of Britain. The Anglo-Saxons are collection of various Germanic peoples.

T. Shor speaks about the Wilts tribe. Talking about the Saxons, he said that "in the east they were adjacent to the Venedian countries, known as Wilts or Wilzi.

A large Venedian tribe, which in the 9th century occupied the territory next to the Danish tribe, along the western coast of the Baltic, was the Obodrite tribe, also known as Bodrichi (Bodrica). This neighborhood led to close contacts between them and the Danes, or Normans. In the middle of the 9th century, an area is mentioned on the border of the Normans and Obodrites ("in confinibus Nordmannorum et Obodritorum").

The possibility that this Wendish tribe settled in England among the Danes arises from their proximity in the Baltic, from their political alliance under the reigns of Kings Sweyn and Cnut, from the historical reference to Obodrites in the service of Cnut in England, and also from the similarity of some place-names on the territory of England, colonized by the Danes, to place-names on the Continent, known for being all of Venedian or Slavic origin.

The connection of the Slavic tribes of ancient Germany with the settlement of Britain is also confirmed by the ancient customs preserved in England, which were widespread in the Slavic countries. This is evidenced by folklore, traces of Slavic influence in the Anglo-Saxon language and some old toponyms that indicate Wends or are related to Rugs and Wilts.
