WSDS 2026 | TransforMinds | Safeguarding the Himalayas

At TransforMinds, a special fireside chat during the World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS) 2026, Ms Ambika Singh Kahma, Chief Correspondent & Content Head, Special Projects, NDTV, speaks with Dr Pema Gyamtsho, Director General, International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD).
The dialogue brings urgent attention to the Hindu Kush Himalayan region, home to over 54,000 glaciers that serve as a critical water source for millions across Asia. Dr Gyamtsho explains how rapid glacier melt, climate-induced hydrological extremes, and ecosystem stress are transforming mountain systems and threatening livelihoods both upstream and downstream.
The conversation also highlights the importance of regional collaboration among Himalayan nations, improved disaster risk management, and integrating traditional knowledge from local mountain communities into policy and governance.
Looking ahead to 2050, Dr Gyamtsho shares a powerful vision for the Himalayas as a zone of peace, ecological resilience, and sustainable development, where future generations can still witness snow-capped peaks and thriving mountain communities.
