Deadly Fer-de-Lance Viper Coiled up a Tree
Witness a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with one of the biggest problem snakes in Costa Rica - the Terciopelo or Fer de lance viper (Bothrops asper). These vipers are known for staying close to the ground, but in this video, we captured a rare sight of one climbing high up in a tree near Golfito, Costa Rica.
During a jungle night hike, we initially mistook this viper for an Eyelash Viper (Bothriechis schlegelii) upon a palm branch. But upon closer inspection using a selfie stick, we realized that it was indeed a Fer-de-Lance or Terceopelo (Bothrops asper).
It's not uncommon for the young of this species to climb a meter off the ground, but this little fella was a whopping three meters off the ground or right at ten feet. This suggests that it was probably waiting for a tree frog to come by, making for an excellent hunting spot.
This video captures the ferocious beauty of this rare sight, which we observed for three consecutive nights in the jungle. So come and witness this incredible moment with us and marvel at the incredible capabilities of the Fer de lance viper in its natural habitat.
