Should We Go Back the Moon?

45 years to the day after the final Apollo moon landing, the president signed a directive tasking NASA with returning to the moon.

This, was a change of plans. When the Space Shuttle program had come to an end in 2011, President Obama had laid out plans for landing astronauts on an asteroid around the year 2025, as a sort of middle step before beginning Mars missions in the 2030’s.

Now the asteroid plan is scratched and the “middle step” will instead be the moon.

Setting aside all other politics, is this a good plan? Is going back to the moon worth it?
