"The Uniqueness of Congregational Singing" – David Platt
“We cannot expect music to do what only the gospel can do.” - David Platt
Why does God call his people to sing together? We can praise God in song as individuals any time, anywhere. Yet, as David Platt observes in this sermon from Nehemiah 12 at Sing! 2017, congregational singing is unique. Gathered worship is no spectator sport. We all participate in unity, as a family bonded by God’s grace. God is glorified when his people, young and old, from various backgrounds, join to sing in one accord.
Platt reminds us that we can never expect music to do what only the gospel can do. The gospel unites us. God’s saving power in Christ is what draws a church together--a group of people who have different musical tastes and cultural expressions. The point is not that we all love the same genre of music; it is that we all love the same Savior. As our voices come together in harmony, the watching world sees a supernatural expression of unity, a unity purchased by Christ’s blood.
Sing! Global 2020 will provide several seminars on congregational singing, including talks and interviews with practical wisdom for the new challenges to congregational singing brought about by the global pandemic. Sign up today!
