Minoan Palace of Knossos on the Island of Crete - Part 3 of 3 (East Wing, royal apartments)
Join us as we go to the East Wing and the royal apartments of the Minoan Palace of Knossos. We see the Queen’s private apartment that was located next to the King’s. The names of the royals were King Minos and Queen Pasiphae. There are beautiful decorations on the walls of the Queen’s apartment of dolphins and of dancing girls. There is also a room with a small bathtub. There are eleven doorways around the royal apartments referred to as the “Minoan air conditioning system”. For the winter, they shaved the skin of the bulls very thin and dipped them in olive oil to form a translucent barrier to cover the doors and let in light as there were no glass windows at that time. There was also a water pipe system for fresh running water that came from a spring in the south. You can still see the original pipe made of clay. Nearby is the Theater. It could hold 400 people on its steps and there was a royal box. Leading away from the Theater is the oldest paved road in Europe. Our Guide told us that there are three parts of the Palace of Knossos that they are 100% certain are original from 4000 years ago: the storage area with its clay pots, the throne room, and the Theater.
As we leave to return to Heraklion on the bus, our Guide points out a small royal palace where the vase of the bulls head was found. Our Guide tells us again about the Minoan religious symbol, the labrys, or, double-headed axe. The symbol was found throughout the Palace and that is why it was sometimes called the Palace of Labrys and where the word labyrinth came from. We hear the story of the labyrinth. Then our Guide gives us more history about Crete and how it had a strategic position of being in the center of Asia, Europe, and Africa. We also learn about the walls, the fortification of the area and also of a famous person.
We arrive in Heraklion, the capital of Crete, and have some time to spend in the city.
