THE WELSH SEASIDE Black Rock Sands, nr Porthmadog
Black Rock Sands is approximately 2 ½ miles from Porthmadog, supposing you head as most do to its most westerly point. There is also another access point nearer to Porthmadog
It is always a popular destination, but having around 2 miles for a glorious sandy beach there is plenty of space to be found. The facilities are modest but include a shop, toilets and a slipway for launching vessels. The nearby Morfa Bychan has a small supermarket, a fish-and-chips shop and a gift shop
The views all around are magnificent. To the SE Harlech and its castle can be picked out. The Rhinogs to the east are clearly discernable, along with the whole sweep of Snowdonia as you scan anti-clockwise. Just 1 mile to the north is the hill Moel-y-Gest before you see the Graig Ddu headland, which abuts the western edge of the beach. This is easily surmounted whereby there are all round views which include Criccieth with its castle
The beach is backed by extensive sand dunes. These are part of an SSSI site. Black Rock takes its name from the dark dolerite rocks which form a headland at its eastern edge, nearer to Borth-y-Gest. Porthmadog Golf Course is hereabouts
As can be seen from the video cars are allowed to park on the beach – not a surprise, a charge is payable. Perhaps surprisingly dogs are allowed to the greater part of the beach (see map https://www.visitsnowdonia.info/sites/default/files/2019-03/Map%20Traeth%20Morfa%20Bychan%20Beach%20Map.pdf)
