HOW TO JUMP A MOUNTAIN BIKE | OVER 40 | This dude learns spooky fast!
In How To Jump a Mountain Bike - Over 40, Alex and Lee are joined by former pro roadie Mr. Dills. Mr. Dills is a beast with both wheels on the ground but wants to get comfortable jumping his mountain bike.
We've been riding BMX with Mr. Dills and couldn't help notice how quickly he picks up new bike skills. That makes him perfect for a video like this learning to jump video - where we compress days, weeks or even months of learning into a single day.
Unfortunately, some deep trail trauma from a mountain bike crash in his youth. And so now Mr. Dills lizard brain is trying to take over in the air. Breaking that pattern is job one.
Lee starts with some movement drills on the RipRow and then takes Mr. Dills to the pumptrack. Mr. Dills catches on fast and soon it is time to find the perfect first jump.
Finding the right jump for your first jumping attempts is key to success so we explore what to look for in a launch pad.
Mr. Dill's first handful of jumps are a mixed bag but they quickly reveal some old bad habits and some problematic misconceptions around his mechanics. Lee and Alex see the issue and soon Nathan is not only jumping with confidence, he is even throwing some style.
It's kind of annoying how fast Mr. Dills learns but it's also a constant source of amazement and stoke.
By the end of the session Mr. Dills is beginning the Medium dirt jump line and nearly clearing the first hit. It's the kind of progression we all dream but but rarely achieve.
Lee and I never progressed like this. We didn't have hands on instruction either but I still doubt we would have made the progress that Mr. Dills made in a day.
Your results may be like Mr. Dill's but more likely they will be like ours and it will take many, many days, weeks or months of careful progression. Take your time. Learning to jump a mountain bike is fun - so why the heck rush it.
Mr. Dill's progression does make for a great video AND he could be an incredible addition to the crew. Let us know if you'd like to see him take on more in the future. Bigger jumps? Manuals? Let us know in the comments.
Love,
Alex
